Many of those who come on my guided walks ask me where I get my information from. Along with reading a wide variety of books and attending talks and exhibitions I take the opportunity of visiting the places I mention. Open House London is the capital’s largest annual architectural and design event. It’s an unmissable opportunity to venture into usually private spaces and get to London from the inside. 727 participating London buildings from varying periods will open their doors for free.
This year Open House London is Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 September
No booking is required for most of the participating buildings, simply turn up and if necessary join the queue. I like to get up early, buy a coffee and breakfast along on my way, avoiding most of the queues. The iphone app is very useful for when out and about on the day, especially for updates and maps and is worth every penny of it’s £2.99 price tag. There is also an android version here.
I have written blog posts from previous years:
Take a look inside Unilever House
The Gherkin
Worshipful Society of Apothecaries
New River Head
The concept of Open House has spread to 30 cities worldwide including New York, Rome, Venice and Jerusalem. It’s a great way of planning a holiday where you can ensure you will experience more than what is provided to the usual tourists. See all cities involved here

Customer Comments
"All of the walks are informative, entertaining and a great way to learn about, and see, things in London, that aren't necessarily the top 10 tourist sites. Hazel holds a wealth of information and delivers it in a manner that keeps the group engaged."
“Hazel provided an informative and fun commentary(and well microphoned up) on a cold and windy night. Took us to some places that, although a lifelong Londoner, I had not been to before. I would recommend her walks."
